Sharp as Knives began as a means to use our passion of graphic design and illustration and bring it into the world of fashion. Noticing an absence of locally handcrafted, high-quality apparel that is inclusive to all humans, no matter their size or gender, we decided to start a screenprinting business with designs that we ourselves would want to wear. We believe that all humans should feel as comfortable in their own skin as in one of their t-shirts!

As a co-founder of Sharp as Knives, I have had the amazing opportunity to learn how a business is run from behind the scenes. Working alongside my partner, we have developed our brand from the ground up, creating a logo, a website, a social media presence, many handmade products, to running booths at various local markets.

I focused on creating our logo, managing the website, creating a social media strategy, business to customer relations, SEO (search engine optimization), editing photos (and modelling the t-shirts!), as well as making handmade candles that we sold online and at markets.

The Challenge

Sharp as Knives started out as a fun activity that quickly became a fun challenge. As my partner and I had never owned a business before, we had to quickly learn about:

  • creating a design project brief;
  • ordering supplies from vendors - taking into account quality, sizing, and amounts;
  • running marketing campaigns on Facebook and Instagram;
  • the ins & outs of local vendor markets;
  • creating and using an e-commerce platform, and keeping our inventory up-to-date and accurate.

We also had the opportunity to work alongside other local start-up businesses through a summer program called Main and Digital with the Innovation Centre in Ottawa. Through this program, we learned how to:

  • maximize our SEO;
  • market for our demographic;
  • create a pitch deck and present our business to various investors;
  • creating and using an e-commerce platform, and keeping our inventory up-to-date and accurate
